We’re getting a taste of summer’s heat this week in Dutchess County! With temps hitting 90 within the next few days, now is a good time to think about your outdoor festivities planned for this summer.

1. Christmas in July – for those who love the Christmas holiday, bring out the wreaths, Dickens village pieces and faux wrapped presents for decorations. Personally, I would crank the air conditioning down pretty low and have people wear their favorite scarf or pom pom hat but if you’re hosting a backyard party, skip the costumes and opt for the white fairy lights, holiday decorations, green and red foods, and frozen hot chocolate drinks and cocktails instead.
2. Tropical Theme from HGTV – the humidity in July will certainly help create the effect of being in a tropical rain forest. Incorporate dark leaves, watery blues and other natural elements for an enchanting dinner table. Serve your favorite fish entree along with coconut sorbet for dessert.
3. Old-Fashioned Lobster Bake – cracking open lobsters WILL get messy so why not eat them outdoors? Cover your table with old newspapers, add some big bowls or platters for the discarded shells, pitchers of water or your favorite beverage, and give each of your guests LOTS of extra napkins, a traditional bib and a shell cracker.
4. Red, White and Blue Americana – those colors never go out of style, especially in July. Even if you’re party is held after Independence Day, carry over your patriotism with red, white and blue decorations and your favorite American food. Hamburgers and hot dogs are my favorites and I just love these crafty utensil holders which match the theme perfectly!
5. Under the Sea – carry on with the Little Mermaid theme for a child’s party or make your adult party a more generic beach party but there are LOTS of beach-themed decorations that will put you in the beach mood, even if you live in the mountains. Decorate your table with shades of white and blue, add white votive candles for your lighting and make your own napkin rings by gluing seashells to plain napkin rings.
